Phoenix is killed during a trial in court he and Edgeworth were working on, when a person who wanted revenge on Edgeworth barges in to shoot him. Phoenix defends Edgeworth by shielding him from the bullets.
Edgeworth feels guilty since the culprit had been someone he send to jail during his Demon prosecuting days when the guilty verdict had been all that mattered to him and current investigations showed the man was innocent. Hadn't it been for him, Phoenix would still be alive.
However he keeps dreaming of Phoenix, telling him that he's very much alive and asking him to wake up. These dreams are the only thing that Edgeworth looks forward to especially with his guilt eating him up so much that the real world is being affected. He slowly feels himself going insane and doesn't know which part of his life is a dream and which is reailty.
But as it turns out he had in fact been in coma the whole time, having taken a fatal shot from that fateful day at court. When he wakes up he sees Phoenix right next to him, begging him to wake up.

I have never seen a Lauren Paups/Miles Edgeworth post and this needs to be remedied. Maybe she's masturbating to thoughts of him? Or he actually likes her somewhat in that sense and there's het sex?
